Fans not coming on, melted fan relay
Posted by: TheScAtMaN - 20 Oct 2018, 15:10 - Forum: 1 - Engine - Replies (6)

So recently I had to replace my battery as it had dead cells.
On hooking up my new battery the fans immediately came on without the ignition on or anything.

Now I have fitted a few years back David McKeen's solid state fan and fan fail relays as well as a button to bypass the otterstat. Occasionally I have lent on the button by accident but it seemed off. David's fan relay also has a 'run on' feature that will keep the fans spinning after you turn off the ignition for a minute or so.
With both of these in mind I waited a minute or so to see if the fans would stop on their own.
Then I smelt the distinct wiff of electrical burning from my relay compartment!
The fan relay was red hot and smoking. I quickly shut down power and let it cool and when I pried the relay out it looked like this:

I found my spare, original fan relay and tried it. Everything seemed fine, the fans did not come on without the engine and the relay did not get hot.
I started her up and left her to idle for a while and when she got up to temp the fans kicked in and all seemed well. The only odd thing was that my fan override switch no longer seems to force the fans on, although I could hear a 'click' coming from the relay compartment.
I vowed to investigate further and contact David McKeen to see if he had any ideas.

A few days later I needed to take her for an MOT. On the drive over there I was stuck in some traffic but the fans came on and the temp gauge read normal, in fact when I pulled up to the garage the fans were on. But at some point during testing, with the engine left running,  they turned off and stayed off -resulting in the engine starting to overheat and dumping red-hot water out of the expansion tank overflow. Shock

I cut the power using my battery isolator and checked the relays, seemed fine, not hot. I also in desperation took apart my fan override switch. On re-connecting the battery I wiggled the fan switch a bit and the fans came on! We topped up the water and I made a break for home.
A few miles down the road though I hear a click from the relay compartment and the fans stop again. Toggling and wiggling my fan switch resulted in a audible click from a relay but the fans not turning on. My temp started to climb when in traffic but was able to keep moving and avoid anymore overheating.

So what could be going on? Could my otterstat override switch be dodgy which melted the solid state relay? was the solid state and spare realy both faulty or is something killing them? Is my otterstat up the duff?

Any suggestions on where to look appreciated!

  Front fascia brackets
Posted by: Rich Hanlon - 19 Oct 2018, 00:46 - Forum: DeLorean Cars or Parts For Sale or Wanted - Replies (7)

Hi folks, have discovered my front fascia brackets have turned to dust.  (The ones between the polyurethane fascia and the top of the rock-screen.)

P/No. 108466, Stainless equivalents are available from the usual sources at £20 each but that adds up to £100 just for brackets!!

Best price seems to be from Houston at $16.76 which works out at about £13.

Does anyone know of any other sources of these at all please?  Had thought there was a uk supplier at one time.

Thanks, Rich

  VIN 10989 For Sale
Posted by: mikesumner - 15 Oct 2018, 16:41 - Forum: DeLorean Cars or Parts For Sale or Wanted - Replies (14)

Hi guys and girls,

A very good friend of mine has his DeLorean on the market (it's recently featured in the club mag and also on the website) however he wanted to also have it visible on the forum but couldn't post any details himself due to not being able to get into his account.

So for those that are interested here are the basics:

Grey manual
December 1981 build
Imported to the UK May 2015 and currently located on the east coast of Lincolnshire
50,450 miles
10 months MOT
The car is in very good condition throughout, including the body panels, and can be used immediately.
All the usual updates including a complete set of replacement DMC relays, a Stage 1 performance exhaust upgrade, and Spax shock absorbers
The frame is clean, straight, and in good condition
The car starts very keenly, drives well, and idles as it should
I have around $12,000 worth of invoices since 2012 of the work the car has had done and am happy to provide evidence of this if an interested party should require
The only real negative is a cracked binnacle, although if I was keeping the car I'd have this refurbished

Looking for £30k

Please don't contact me directly if you're interested in the car, but contact my friend Mike (the owner) on either 07443 464978 or drago1979@hotmail.com

I've created a public photo album on my Facebook page as I don't seem to be able to upload photos directly on here.  Please feel free to take a look

  DOC YouTube channel
Posted by: theningiachicken - 15 Oct 2018, 09:15 - Forum: General Discussions on the DOC / Car / Company / JZD - Replies (16)

Hi all me and a friend had an idea earlier last week about the club having a YouTube channel for anything from events to maintenance videos also it could help for putting them into posts as the link could be put into the post, another point we had was as the channel grew YouTube would start to pay the channel owner which in turn could benefit the club.
Let me know your guys opinion on this idea

  Wanted - Door mirror motor
Posted by: MML - 07 Oct 2018, 00:23 - Forum: DeLorean Cars or Parts For Sale or Wanted - Replies (2)

Would anyone have a working one of these lying around? I don't need the whole mirror, just the tilting mechanism. I opened one up to see if it could do with a rebuild, but I seem to have broken part of the casing in the process. As a result it won't stay sealed.

  Dublins done deal Delorean !!!
Posted by: Dave M - 06 Oct 2018, 22:05 - Forum: General Discussions on the DOC / Car / Company / JZD - Replies (3)

It's now been exactly a year since I viewed the Delorean in an underground car park in Dublin town centre - I was in the position of purchasing a car summer 2017 so I joined the owners club and the eurotec forum - and was keeping an eye out for any cars coming up for sale - then on the eurotec forum there was talk of a possible scam on the car advertised on the Irish version of eBay "done deal ".
The seller just put library pics on the advert and none of the actual car itself - I live at the end of west wales near the ports of Fishguard and Pembroke so would have been fairly easy to pop across on ferry for the 3 hour crossing but then another 3 hour drive to Dublin - but hang on a minute - I got a mate that lives over there ----- 5345 was going to have  a new home across the water - - - - - - to be continued ---------
