The handbrake on mine is crap as well. Maybe its just a delorean thing?

No I crimped the spliced contacts together, just made a poor job of it to be honest in my haste. Better now having used my ratchet crimpers.

hi the column bushing is a bit tricky

you do have to remove the column including wheel.

then i used a socket and bolt to tighten to pull the bushing into place.

column then slides back in. sounds easy but took me a while.

worth spraying release oil on the column bolts under the hood.

for the few pounds they are, its worth changing the rear pads anyway

Not looking forward to the steering column bush. It is the only job left unless I change the pads so will try to crack on with it

I love it when people use ratchet crimpers and correct tools to do the job. Big Grin

Trying to get motivated to start the steering column bush replacement but it was a late night last night lol. Once it is done though I am confident it will pass

Hi

I found it easier to remove the whole coloum, very little extra work to take it out, that way you can pull the centre splined rod right out of the coloum so your only working with that bit.

Its easier to get this into the top knucle joint that way.

Make sure the bolt goes back so its in the 'centre' of the two splined bits .

Plenty of WD the night before will help.

Just finished the steering column bush. Makes a world of difference. That is all the work done now hopefully. Just a case of getting the retest now.

I took the wheel off and the rest of the column apart. The old bush might as well have not been there. I don't know whether it is normal for the key barrel section to be impossible to get off but I had just enough slack in the wiring to manouvre it in and out. Glad it is done now, biggest problem was getting the splines out of the top knuckle joint, as the ram in the column for adjusting the column in and out is a pain.

I take it your handbrake just needed adjusting?

Phill's car failed only on the handbrake being only 13% efficient, stripping the
rear brakes down revealed that one of the handbrake pads had actually fallen
out and was missing totally!

Popped into a motor factors in Heanor, who said they could get them, and said
they were £35+VAT Shock Shock Shock Shock

Went down to my mates at SDL in Derby (they are a trade supplier) who I can
deal with cos I work round the corner at Mercedes Smile, and we are getting a
set on Monday, Ferodo ones (FDB822) at £18+VAT for a set. Still pricey,
but better then over £40 with the vodka and tonic.

MOT suicide. Adjusted handbrake at Caliper instead of further back and it slipped on way to test centre. Met the efficiency limit but failed on imbalance with the other side. Will try to sort it now and try again tomorrow. Everything else OK

Alistair was round tonight and we adjusted the handbrake with less strain on the cable by using the screw with the split pin. He also worked his magic with the idle speed. My car has no idle speed motor at the minute for whatever reason and it is manually set. With his trained ear and delicate touch he adjusted it to around 1000 RPM. The Lambda switch was changed as well which may cure the cars unquenchable thirst. Thanks for your help and parts Alistair.
