What a few Days!!!
#16
Hi,

You DO NOT need a registration number to book or have an MOT they can do it on the VIN.

You NEED the MOT to register the car afterwards.

Hope this helps remove your stress Big Grin

The DVLNI will not let me book an MOT without a registration. I tried on Saturday. When I went to register the car on Monday they said I needed insurance but did not mention MOT. I now have insurance and thought the next step was registration then MOT...confusion

Sounds like you've got a chicken/egg situation.

When I imported my car last Sept I was told by DVLA and my local DVLA office that I had to get the MOT before I could register the car.

They easily did this at my local MOT test centre, by entering the VIN on the DVLA MOT PC. No problems at all.

Took the fresh MOT and my insurance to the DVLA office, paid the registration fee and 12 month tax fee, and got a log book and tax disc, new MOT (with reg number on); in the post 4 days later.

I'm sure its the same for you?

Best regards

Hi Matthew,

When I got my car, I booked it in for MOT on the chassis number also. Then when it passed, I was issued with an MOT disc and Cert with the last 5 digits of the chassis number on it.
You don't get a replacment disc here with your reg on it until the following year when you re-MOT it.
I know this cause mine still has the original in the window with the chassis number on it. (up for MOT in Newry tomorrow)
Then you take your MOT cert or disc with insurance to the DVLNI office (mine was Armagh) and tax it, the log book(V5) will be posted out later.

Hope this helps, not trying to confuse things :?

I think it is the staff on the telephones in the MOT booking centre that confuse things to be honest, I'll try again today and keep you all informed

I was on the phone this morning to the MOT centre again. Same story, no MOT without registration, no registration without MOT. I pushed the point and she said she would speak to another member of staff and put me on hold. 5 minutes later I had an MOT date, 19th July!!! Not good for me getting the ferry next Wednesday but at least now it was made I could try for a cancellation. An hour later I rang asking about a cancellation and there was one available for 19th June at 9.40am.

Hopefully the car will pass and I can tax and register in the late morning and get plates made in the afternoon before the ferry that night. Tight or what! Alistair, and hopefully Thomas, are coming tomorrow evening to tackle a few issues. So if I feel ready I will try for an earlier cancellation giving me more time and a small opportunity of a retest if required.

Wish me luck!

I will do what I can to ensure it does but we all have our experiences with MOT centre staff and what they are capable of. Hopefully it all works out. Just gave a quick steam wash to the underside of the engine and gearbox as they were a bit oily. At least if something needs fixed I will be able to see it now.

MOT is 11:40 tomorrow. At 7:30 I will be at Keiths removin his track rod ends to put them into mine (you're a legend Keith), I will then call for a set of wiper blades on my way back. Once fitted I will try to find somewhere to get the headlights aligned and work out why it is runnung a bit rich. Without a tester though it is difficult.

The old side lights may need to be disconnected and the side ones converted to indicators if I can work out how it is done.

Tonight I removed the old track rod ends, wired in the fog light and fitted a new windscreen washer pump.

Last night we got the handbrake tightened as well as washing around the underframe and diagnosing more problems. It was at this stage the track rod end problem was found! I don't know if the rear running lights will be a problem, I mean the ones on the rear quarter panels.

Thanks for all the help Thomas, couldn't have done a lot of it without you.

Hopefully it all goes to plan and I have an MOT to enable registration and tax.

not trying to worry you again, but here after going to DVLA they take a few days to issue the reg number and tax disc.

they post (or you can collect).

i'm surprised about the MOT...here you can pretty much drive into a place while u wait!

As far as I know I can register and get my tax disc on the same day. Even when I bought my BMW in England I had to register it with the authorities in Northern Ireland with the same form as the Delorean.

The MOT over here has specific test centres that must be used. They do nothing but carry out MOT's and SVA's. There is always a waiting list but you can usually get a cancellation

2835 failed it's first MOT. Not too bad as I can get a retest early in the week and there is nothing major.

Problems were
- No front indicators
- Steering Column Excessive movement. I was told when I bought the car it needed a steering column bush. I ordered one from Ed which arrived on Friday.
- Weak Handbrake. This was adjusted but just not enough. Was 13% not 16% as required. I am sure he could have pulled it harder. I put it down to him being right handed lol.
- Offside parking brake low effort (5%)

Norfolk is still a possibility!!!

Indicators are working ok now. A bit of a bad contact at one side probably from splicing in the new sidelights but nothing major. I have installed my new fuel sender as well and was horrified to see how empty it was despite putting £40 in it so far.

Going to adjust handbrake now and then tackle steering column bush later or tomorrow. Nothing too difficult. Might even fit my angle drive if it isn't too complicated.

I am enjoying it more now without the pressure of MOT
