STEERING
#1
Hi all.
After taking herman to an MOT station today to have my lights aligned so i don't blind everyone. On the nights I go out, it was all going well until I said "well now its on the ramp lets have a look underneath". Up he went on the ramps. The MOT man said "Well its in good nick" until he put his hand on the steering rod that goes bewteen the front wheels. He could lift it up and down, so say no more! I phoned Dan at DMUK to find out that this is not an MOT thing, and they can't fail you on it. Did I say that right dan ?? Are you able to move this rod? as when I got it home, the car was fine. When I turned the wheel and tried to move it up and down, there was no play, but.... when the wheels were facing torwards the passanger side, the rod moved up and down should this happen Sad :?:

Tried to read your post like you where in front of me speaking but I can just about make out what you are trying to say! Get a spell checker!! I think what you are trying to say is that your steering rack is loose?

An owner over here had the same problem and it turned out he was missing a bracket that held the steering rack in place on the frame, you might be missing one of these.

Here is the link on DMCH site, part numbers 9 & 12 is what you should have on your car holding the rack to the frame.

Sounds like the rack bush has failed on the right hand side where the rack exits the "tube". I had the same failure on my own car and seen it in others. The rack needs to be refurbished - and this is probably one of the most common jobs we do after brake systems. It shouldn't make you crash in the mean time though.

Our MOT guy said that he cannot fail a car for play in the steering rack because it is -not- part of the MOT test. Ball joints and track rod ends, yes, the rack itself, no. If they argue, tell them to ring the ministry. Likewise for amber front lights - as long as you have white as well, and it's an imported car (obviously) then it's not a failure.

On the website chum, under Parts -> Suspension and Steering. £250 but when you get it back you know where your money's gone. We do them on exchange but the donor rack would need to go off and turnaround is about a week if you were to order it tomorrow
