Cleaning out the VOD. What do I need?

Simple really. Thinking of tackling cleaning out the VOD over the autumn and winter but wasn't too sure what equipment and parts I need to do this. Also on the other forum people mentioned that my engine sounds like the valve clearance is out, so want to sort that out while in there. So, what bits do I need, and is there anything I should do while in there?

Looking about there are a few guides out the on dmctalk.org etc for VOD dismantle procedure, but not any lists of bits that you need to buy. Does the club do a good kit for this type of thing?

I was thinking of filming each stage (complete with swearing maybe when stuff goes wrong) and making a step-by-step video. I know some people have spoken about bolts getting stuck, or even worse snapping off when you take them out. Here's hoping that doesn't happen. Sounds like a nightmare!

Any advice from those have done it (most I imagine).

It's worth cleaning out all the indents in the casting. I found a wet and dry hoover worked well for that.

My advice on the fluid transfer pipe (the y shaped one bolted to the block) is leave it well alone unless it is leaking.

When I did the head gaskets and timing chains etc. on my car it was the last bolt I removed that sheared!
I thought while I am in here I'll just replace those 'O' rings in there.....don't do it! :oops:

I fully agree with what Nick says about clearing the vod out, but its best to remove the 'y' piece now while you're in there, those o ring seals are going to be 30+ years old if they haven't been replaced previously, so you don't want to strip it down again when you've flushed the cooling system out and have nice new antifreeze circulating round your system looking for places to break out of (and its not cheap anymore!).
Bite the bullet and go the whole way, lots of WD40 on the small bolts and clips, take your time removing them- I sheared one flush with the block but got the remains out with an extractor, its not the end of the world and you'll have the satisfaction and peace of mind it's been done.
There's a shed load of information and guides on this subject on the net, have a look through them before deciding 8)
PS on mine there was rusty deposits blocking parts of the y pipe, a few minutes with a round file cleaned them out so worth taking it off to clean and paint.
