Insurance
#1
Just been informed my a member that he had a quote last month from FJ for £250 for his RHD car.....just tried to insure it today and it had gone up to £450!!!!

When he queried it, he was told "something had happened".

It looks like we could all be paying for the recent car theft!

I'm surprised that the theft (car insured by Haggerty's apparantly), has hit the insurance
databases already, maybe there is more of a specialised network for Classic Cars.

I think all insurance is going up at the moment, more and more uninsured/unlicenced drivers bumping up the premiums as I understand it. Makes the discounts you get for being a club member more important!Especially now Haggerty's on board as well.

It may be considered a rather a low theft risk ..........it is rather noticeable!

The best quote I got was 220 quid from Adrian Flux (Heritage was about £80 more). However, this is a limited mileage of only 1500 miles a year and it is kept over night at an insured secure sight. I did insure him before being registered, so this may account for it being a bit more expensive than usual?

Interesting to see how everyone's insurance costs differ so much.

I've just renewed and changed from FJ to Adrian Flux, obviously all situations are different, but my deal was as follows.

£235 premium
2000mile per year
Social and commuting to work
£19'000 agreed value with salvage rights

I changed from FJ, who's renewal offer had shot up over £300 although FJ was unlimited mileage, i only clocked a pitiful 500miles between mot's last year anyway.

also with Flux agreed value can be sorted with photos unlike FJ who insisted on me having an appraisal letter from a club official or someone in the trade, which would be a pain in the bum as I don't live near any officials.

Insurance companies, like most businesses these days, don't value loyalty one iota so shop around or you will get fleeced.

I'm with Towergate, or should I say, will be until next Monday. I've just had my latest quotation through. Last year I was quoted a ridiculous amount, but due to circumstances, I had no option but to go with it, due to work commitments limiting my insurance hunting/swapping time. So this year, is even more ridiculous, another £65 thrown on top of last years, to now bring it to £389.04 with 3000 miles! So, i'm planning on, current illness allowing, shopping around this week. I know I could have gone with Adrian Flux last year for about half this amount, but didn't have time. So is this (rhetorically) due to the recent D' theft, or is this just an insurance trend? I seem to think the former. The insurance for the Civic and the BMW have dropped quite significantly this year, and look to be continuing with this trend. So i think it's odd that the D' is going in the opposite direction.

Anyway, if I cannot find a significantly better deal, then my plan for M.O.T. and oil leak repairs next week will go on hold, and i'll be mothballing LEX for the foreseeable future. I cannot afford to fork out insurances prices of that degree for a car which is lucky if it sees 1000-2000 miles a year.

Chris It seems a sad fact that loyalty means nothing to insurance companies, they just stick the premium up and hope you don't notice or your too busy to shop around.

Buy Classic Car Weekly and try the classic car insurers, listed in there, then phone them up and negotiate a bit more off!

I thought mine was expensive at about £200.

Just renewed mine with FJ, it was £240 but I only tried a couple of others. Mileage limited to 1500 though, but that's realistic at the moment.

Ok, looks more promising now. Maybe LEX is not going to be mothballed after all.

Synopsis:

With £200 excess, £24k agreed valuation, £100,000 Legal cover, recovery service, salvage rights, i'm 36.5 with NOTHING BAD TO REPORT TO ANY QUESTIONS RELATING TO NEGATIVE REASONS NOT TO INSURE ME and full license held since I was 17 and the car is a TOY, not for every day use, only social use so 3000 miles max.

Towergate: £389.04 (Ridiculous!)
Performance Direct (whoever they are - phoned ME!): £387 (Almost exactly and equally ridiculous - and I quoted THEM that!)
Adrian Flux: £295 (getting Better, but I still want improvement)
Footman James: NO QUOTE (Refused to quote me with the car being kept at my parents, so far away from my home address - even though it's arguably safer and being looked after by a whole cul-de-sac's worth of nosey, critical, retired, beady-eyed criticising old pensioners under lock and key)
Heritage: NO QUOTE (Refused to quote me with the car being kept at my parents, so far away from my home address - OH-OH!! Common trend starting to take shape!)
Hagerty: £215 (Now we're talking! BUT....BIG, "BUT", they will NOT insure me if/when I take the car to Rugby to keep in my driveway for any prospective car show season driving during the summer months)
Finally, my last attempt of the day, Lancaster. Results pending. They have to phone up their underwriters and will phone me back tomorrow morning.

Don't forget with Adrian Flux/Hegerty you should get a DOC membership discount, they don't always factor that in so worth reminding them!
