Thoughts of a potential DeLorean owner
#46
at least the De wont depreciate in value like a 'modern coupe' Smile

Robin Simpson has just put his De up for sale, that has the kudos of
being in the Top Gear studio in 2004 Smile That really is a stunning car.

As for the FB groups, the only one that is linked to the DeLorean Owners Club UK
is this one - http://www.facebook.com/pages/DeLorean- ... 0395051618

I try to keep it updated as much as possible, but if there's anything happening down
your neck of the woods that you want posting on there, then let me know Smile

Hi Guys! Sorry to high jack your thread however it's been a really interesting read and aswered many of my questions.
I am new to the forum and have been thinking about buying a D for a long while now. For me I'd prefer to keep the cost of buying one as low as possible and spend time and effort (and probably a fair amount of cash) doing it up!

I was wondering how much a runner needing work, with good body work world set me back?
Also i am very tempted to buy one from the US but not sure if it's worth using these all in one shipping companies as it seems a real headache shipping it over myself?

I'd love to take a good look at one so if anyone is close to the Derby area and wouldn't mind, that would be great. The late sept Derby meet would have been ideal however is was away Sad.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
M

If you're up for the restoration-side of things, then importing is your best bet. The odd car does turn up here in that regard, but they are rare (if you're happy to wait, it's not a problem).

Look on Ebay US for starters as there are often a few projects on there.

Money-wise, in the US they range from $6k upwards. Once you're in the teens you're in to "runner" territory and then once in to the $20k range you have yourself a solid car.

It's really up to you how far you want to go - and don't be put off by importing, it's really not that complicated. Smile

hiya, welcome to the forum and the DOC-UK Smile

We live quite close to J27 of the M1 (about 15-20 miles from Derby), and have 2 cars,
so you can have a look at a black interior car and a grey interior car, and also compare
manual and auto.

My car is a rolling resto, and I can show you all the work that's been done over the last
9 years by myself and Phill, all my good friends in this club and a bodywork specialist.

If you want to meet up sometime, then drop me a pm - there's a car meet in Chilwell in Nottingham
next Sunday afternoon, not sure if I'll be taking mine (and if its raining we wont be going), but if not,
we might be free next Saturday morning (I'm driving an Audi R8 round a race track in the afternoon Big Grin )

Thank you for your responses. I am definitely more interested in restoring one so I will register my interest on the forum. Of course keep me posted on any that come up I might find interesting. Smile. May I ask as regard to importing are there any reliable all in one shipping companies that will handle pick up to drop off? Also have you or anyone had experience of buying from the US? Can community members help with this in terms of vetting the car before purchase or is it a case of having to fly over?

Thank you for the kind offer of coming to see your D's they sound great and I'll definitely make some time to pop over in the near future.

Just out of interest are there any real differences between the models between 81 and 83?

I'll try to handle each question...

1. Shipping-wise, yes there are a few that will do "door to door" and if you head back to www.deloreans.co.uk there is a guide which should help you. I've used a couple of places and found a few brokers around too - expect somewhere in the region of $1k+ for shipping.
2. Get on the US forums and if someone is near a car, you'll likely be able to get a vetting - but read up and ask around because it'll be 3rd party information. It is always better to see a car for yourself and I've done that in the past too - and it's not hugely expensive (but it's a cost none the less) to go out and see. When I buy my next car I will be seeing it for myself before I purchase.
3.Model years - there are differences.. but to be honest, it's car to car. From a factory point of view, the earlier cars had lourved hoods with a "gas flap" whereas the later cars either had just the louvres of a completely flat bonnet/hood.
Interior wise, the early cars tended to be black inside and the middle cars, grey. The last cars were often hybrids with grey carpets and black seats/dash.
Early cars often had the antenna either in the windscreen on front right wing - and later cars in the rear (off to the left in a vent, and electric..).
Early cars had dark grey wheels, and later cars - shiny.

But again, these cars are 30 years old, so some will have had changes made and repairs so you could find an early car with a flat hood, or a late car with grey wheels... but as you go looking it'll become clear.

What didn't change was the guts. US cars had CATs and probably still will. They'll all have the same transmission and crappy angle-drives (ie, don't trust the mileage, it's likely wrong). And so on.. ask away and we'll answer anything you might want to know - if the information is out there, we'll have seen it! Wink

Thanks again for the response and help. Gives me a few things to consider. I can see how it makes total sense going to see the car you want to buy rather than leave it to 3rd party vetters. On the off chance someone is selling a project in the UK might suit me better for now.

I'll keep me eyes open on this forum. Thanks again.

ok, I've heard back from Laury in Notts, he's up for coming over this Sunday, weather
permitting obviously, so do you want to come over too ?

Might be able to rustle up one or two more local owners and make a 'mini meet' of it Smile

Hi, This weekend is going to be an problem for me I'm afraid. Please go ahead and have the meet anyway Smile
I'll try and make sometime in a few weeks. I am aware of the weather is likely to go bad though.

You're in the opposite position to me since I'm not a mechanic and won't be able to maintain much on a De if I buy one so looking for decent ones that've had the major time-related problems fixed already and unlikely to collapse on me Smile Of course this'll cost me a lot more <<'
I assume Robin Simpson's De already sold? If not is it up on a site somewhere?

Hiya,

yep, Robin's car is sold via Ebay, and is going/gone to Germany.

As for a mini meet, Laury cant do this Sunday now, so he's gonna come over the following
Sunday (30th October). Probably for about 11am or thereabouts.

You are very welcome to come over too if you want - and anyone else who fancies a nosey
round some De's to see what they are like to live with and work on as necessary.

If anyone does want to come along, our address is in DeLorean News, or you can PM me and I'll
send you the details.

@ Leozack -If you’re referring to me I’m not particularly good with fixing cars, in fact I’m pretty poor Smile I’d prefer to keep initial costs down and spend time doing the car up (now is as good time to learn as any) Smile I have a few family members who can help.
Keep us posted on your search !

@ Guinney1971 – Thanks again for the invitation but I won’t be able to make the 30th. It’ll be a few weeks before I’m back to the land of the living.
Hopefully I can catch the next one Smile
