Poor Weston Pier
#1
Hi all

Just came back from a weeks holiday to Weston.

I'm sure many of you heared on the news that the Pier had a fire last Monday.

Just to assure you, I had nothing to do with this, even though I have tendancies to start fires in my past!

This is what it looked like last year......

And this is this year....

I don't think it's terminal though, by thursday, they had re-opened the pier up as far as the fire damage.

I was amazed on how the heat had literally turned the RSJ's limp!

sorry to be a boring structural engineer, but this is why modern steel buildings have fire protection to steelwork, like plasterboard or intumescent paint.

at temperatures in even a domestic fire, steel will loose its strength rapidly.

you would think by now that many public buildings would have to fit sprinklers. modern sprinklers only activate local to a fire to minimise water damage.
