Hi Guy's
I can help a little on the insurance explaination as I run a wedding hire business.
As soon as you take cash for a ride in your car, it's seen as "Hire and Reward"
Some local authorities (councils) require a Hackney plate or "Taxi" registration to operate Hire and Reward in their area. You can get around this by having a 7 day booking period. Basically a punter needs to book your car 7 days in advance of the hire. (This protects the interests of the Hackney plate holders) A Hackney plate costs around £30 GRAND. yes you heard right. There are a finite number issued by local councils and no more. You have to buy one from an existing holder. (Stops everyone becoming a taxi driver/prevents un licensed cabs)
Wedding Hire is viewed differently than hire and reward (proms. anniversaries airports etc) It's far easier to get wedding hire than plain hire and reward from an insurance company. You also need a third party liability insurance incase they bump their head getting in your car and decide to sue you. You also need personal/business insurance incase they sue you if you get a puncture and your late etc etc.
You CAN get insurance for self drive hire on a Delorean, but it's not cheap. (I looked into it last year) You'll need to ask the punter for around £500 per day to cover the insurance (providing they have a clean license), plus as Arran says you'll need to decide on a heafty deposit in case they trash your car. then you'll want to make some profit for yourself. It means realistically a £1000-2000 deposit, then £750 a day to hire your car. Youll make around £250 a pop if they don't damage anything. Then of course you'll need to take into consideration servicing, tyre wear, mileage, full refunds if they breakdown etc etc... They may also offer a fake ID. it's your responsibility to check with DVLA or the insurance/hire contract is void.
Believe me it ain't worth it! (unless your running a fleet of high performace hires already)
The best advice I can give is just do the odd job as a Favour, or use the lett system (Ride in car to prom for garage owners son in exchange for a free MOT for example)
Best Regards
