Paperwork!!!

Got a V55/5 form and time to fill it in- but im confused:
Reg mark- do I source a personalised plate and put that in the box or leave it blank
Do I need on-road insurance- it says to send the insurance certificate but its safely garaged and off road insured
Do I MOT or register first.
Wanted to sort this stuff before summer and im expecting them to take ages.

Hiya,

1. Leave the registration mark blank unless you have a private plate which
is already on a Retention Document (V778 IIRC)
2. You'll need an insurance certificate for the car - most insurers will give you
cover based on the chassis number until a reg number is given by the DVLA/DVLNI
3. Yes, you will need an MOT (which will also be done on the chassis number)
as the vehicle is over 3 years old.

Also, the DVLA will require a 'first registration fee' which is £50 (although I
have heard that this has now gone up again to £55), in addition to however
much road tax you want - current PLG rates for the DeLorean are £101.75
for 6 months, and £185.00 for 12 months.

You will also need to send proof of I.D. usually photo card style driving licence,it will need to be "on road" insurance, but as Claire said you insurance comapny will supply you with a 14 day cover note,
they will aslo want its previous documents, i.e. american registration cert, they will keep that , so copy it now, also they will want proof you have paid the import duty and VAT. I am amusiming you have brought it from the US,

Im in Wales about 80 miles from DVLA, I didnt want to leave my licence with them so for me it was worth the trip, I would advice you send yours special next day delivery, just make sure you supply a phone number they can reach you on, then if they have any questions you wont be waiting for postal delay

I think it depends on the attitude (and also the workload) of your DVLA local office.

I used Luton VRO as that was my local one at the time. After 3 weeks, I
contacted them to ask what was happening, and they said they couldnt
process it without the C&E386 form - nice of them to tell me! and it was a
form I had never been given when I'd originally collected the car from Tilbury
Docks, so I had to do a 120 mile round trip to Tibury to pick the form up and
then get to Luton VRO on a Friday afternoon before 3pm.

The insurance company I used at the time (Sharmans) were happy to insure
Flopsy on her Vin number for as long as required, and just asked me to let
them know as soon as I knew the registration number.

'Dodgy Motor' is also correct that they will require to see all the shipping
documents, proofs that import duty has been paid and also the USA title (their
version of the V5C registration document).

Best thing to do is take absolutely every bit of paperwork you've got into them,
then let them check through it all whilst you are there. Then they can let you
know there and then if there's anything missing.

Agree with all that Claire has said, take absolutely everything you have.

I also took a photo of the VIN plate on the driver's doorway which shows the VIN no and the date of manufacture. If there's any doubt they will err towards the older. As mine is a late '81 I was keen to get the proper 'X' plate. If I'd just said '81' they could easily have issued a 'W'. They did take the photo off me so I think it was 'admissible' evidence.

I gave them a photocopy of my vin number too, which shows the date
of manufacture as July 1981 - I also put July 1981 on my V55/5 - even though
the actual date of first registration in the USA was 17 December
1982 - so *technically* should Flopsy have been given a Y reg (and if so,
wouldnt have it been great if I could have found FLO95Y :wink: )

mine took about 4 days from Worcester dVLA

it is definately worth going in person to sort any problems.

you will not be able to register without the customs forms, and really need the US title.

what you don't want is for them to inspect the vehicle!
