in the audio commentary for the third film Bob Gale says that the car was scored and wired with a small charge so that the effect would work right.
I always wondered where the engine went. I would guess that perhaps Doc would have removed it when he put the rail wheels on.
If I were doc I would have removed the 'End of track' buffer and the 1/4 mile warning sign and walked the track before mounting the experiment.
It made the sequence more exciting, i suppose
