He's still sticking to the 23K mark as an asking price and not willing to go down to 18K. I think he purchased it for too much, not knowing what to look for. The speedo also worries me. If its been changed, as looks likely, then what's to stop to odometer being changed and the miles to be reset?

23K would buy the first car, which looks in better condition, even if I cant see the condition of the underside. Maybe should stick with that one or wait for another to come up.

At least the shipping has come out cheaper than I thought it would, and next time I'll be ready and ready for the off.

Claire, did you get marine insurance when you brought the car over?
23k is too much, and the seller of the first one sounds like an ar$e, there are plenty more
cars out there.

I didnt go with marine insurance, TGAL (the shippers) explained what it would cover, and
what it wouldnt, and we realised that if the ship went down, I'd get sweet FA,
so I didnt for it.

Each to their own though, it might be worth it on a more valuable car. Mine was only $4500.....
blimey, $4500! Those were the days. Mind you I've seen the pictures of the work you've done. You deserve a great car after all that work.

Oh well, back to ebay to hunt some more. Sad
Well, if you have 25 grand to spare, here's one that you can actually go see yourself...

(pounds not dollars though Sad )
Whenever they appear in the UK they always seem to be above my £20k limit Sad
WOW! Dangermouse that is one sweet looking DeLorean. I'm with Jwrayth, why are they always so damb expensive over here. Mind you, if i'd done all the importing, restoring and work that has been done on that car i'd want the same.

Oh well, I'm sure I'll find something soon. Why don't you import Jwrayth? Seems the way to go to me, and with a 20K budget you'd be able to find something fairly easy.
I'm actively considering it Smile I'm in discussion over a specific D on dmctalk at the moment, but it still hasn't quite aligned. I've been sent plenty of pictures, but the seller is slower to reply than I'd like, and wants to conduct payment via a direct bank transfer.

I've cross referenced the personal details and pictures he's provided with other sources and can confirm the car is his, but I've never laid down that much cash on something I can't actually afford to look at in person, or via a payment method that leaves me limited options if the seller decides to scamper!
Well good luck with that mate. I've been looking on there as well, but not seen anything that fits the bill. Mind you, sound like you have a bigger budget than me. I'm looking at about 16K GBP all in, or there abouts.

That is the norm.

Certainly when you've been to the bank and see your hard earned £££ disappear it's a bit of a squeaky bum moment. I pretty much bought my car blind, the first time I saw it was when I went down to Southampton docks to pick it up. What I did do however was to get someone else to look over the car for me, it may be worth your while seeing if there is another D owner local to the seller who can visit and check over the car on your behalf.

I can say though, having done it once, I wouldn't have any qualms about importing another D.

Mark,

I saw your request to look at the NC car. In future you might be better posting it in the "General Discussion" area or even the regional clubs sub-forum, particularly if it is one of the busier ones like FL. Many folks don't go to the "for sale" area at all.
Not sure if you have seen this, but 'talk member Chris B started this FB page with all the cars for sale in the states.

http://www.facebook.com/DeloreansForSale

He isn't an owner yet, but he spends a lot of time trawling the web for these. Some are on craigslist, which is more set up for local sales, but you never know.
Fantastic facebook page Dangermouse. Seen some of them on there, but not all of them! Fantastic find. I'll be popping back there each day.

On another note contacted the 2nd car vanished off ebay just 30 minutes before it was due to end, and the reserve wasn't met. Comfirmed still for sale, and I've made my best offer, but heard nothing. Bet its on there again soon.

On the plus side contacted the first guy again and he seemed a lot more responsive. Might just have been sick of international bidders, not to mention newbies like me and our questions. However, laid out my case and he's happy to take an offer. Might put one in later tonight.

What do people think about the grey first edition wheels? are they much different from the silver later versions?

Only thing different is the colour. They are darker than the surrounding metal on th car, of course, and look their nicest when kept clean, and a bit lighter in their natural colour compared to them getting covered in grime and brake dust and becoming even darker. I actually quite like them now. Wasn't so sure in the beginning, originally wanting silver wheels, but the same with the black instead if grey leather etc as stated before, they DO grow on you. Once again, a bit more individual since there are much less cars out there with them. I like to be different from other people, so the attributes associated with the early cars boosts that even more again I feel.

Personally I prefer them to the Silver. Something 'different'
UPDATE!

I've gone and purchased my own DeLorean. Its not one of the ones I've discussed here, but rather another one I stumbled across the other night. Put in an offer and was accepted. Only just happened a couple of hours ago, but $1000 down payment made. Really nice guy selling it, and had a chat on the phone. Somehow speaking to someone makes sending over loads of money for a car you've never seen that little bit less scary, but only a little bit. Details are:

82 model with later style hood - flat with no gas flap, plus delorean logo.
Wide black dealers stripe (original and in excellent condition)
Re-coated/powder coated wheel in silver.
Ariel in the rear grill/panel (something I really wanted).
Manual (thank god).
Grey interior, in excellent shape and with re-covered seats.
Frame in excellent condition - re-painted/coated.
No dents in the stainless.
Working AC and original radio/stereo
Electrics all sorted.
plus much more.

So pleased with the purchase. Just got my fingers crossed that it goes through without a hitch. I will put up some pictures up soon for people, as well as the VIN#. Bit superstitious about spooking the sale at the moment, but couldn't wait to share the news with you guys. After all your advise has REALLY helped me on the way.

Might put a new post on the forum and document the process, might be useful for new buyers in the future.
