Interesting Ebay item, showing that Mattel were interested in producing a model car based on the prototype.... plus a letter from JZD rejecting the current design.

I've not got one of the new hotwheels models so I don't know if its the same but could it be taken from the same model? they look similar from the pics I've seen.

I don't know if Mattel ever did bring out a model in the early 80s....
Perhaps they dusted off the original mould and reworked it, or started again from scratch, who knows

They released the "Turismo" which was a pretty clear take on Proto1, they just added a raised bonnet to get around the look-alike issues.

I had one, I painted it grey and stuck circuit boards on the back :roll:
