Full Version: i need to remove my head

Hello people
It's been a while since I've posted on here. Erm been too busy on facebook.
Anyway the carbs on, the engine's running, fuel pumps pumping, injectors not injecting, valley of death accessible but and it's a big but I've got a bit of a water leak into one of the cylinders. Don't think it's the head gasket or a crack in the cylinder head, what I do think and I know it's very taxing is that erm, erm is that the waters getting in from a manifold bolt. Tried taking the head off today but I got stuck with the old timing chains and my question is, is it worth fannying around taking all the timing chains off and dismantling the engine to remove the head and try and get it repaired or should I get a new engine, because I seem to have a lot of nuts and bolts all over the garage floor and a limit of my skills has been reached. Your wealth of knowledge, ingenuity and experience is greatly apreciated in this matter. Thank you very much for reading and your responses would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, sounds suspicious...What makes you think it's a manifold bolt?
it does sound suspect, i reckon the gasket has rotted (possibly). personally i would buy a a volvo and butcher it for parts and rebuild the original engine, but thats me. Its a shame your not nearer i would have done it for you Tom TT
As above, why would you suspect a head bolt?? Much more probably just the head gasket gone, just use a compression tester to check where and which cylinders to narrow it down. So long as you can fix the timing chains in place when you take a head off there not that difficult to do in situ.

I thought that but i spoke to tom and it sounds like someone has tapped out the thread and gone into the water jacket Shock new head as welding will be a bit tricky TT

Where in the head or block?? With best salesmans hat on I do have a few (good) DeLorean heads spare Smile

Could be worth checking the old Volvo scrap yard on the A1.
If they have any V6 heads laying about.

The only really tricky thing I found when doing the head gaskets is removing the pulley nut.
You can get a flywheel locking tool for Peugeot diesel engines for under £10. Remove the starter
motor and use the locking tool in one of the mounting bolt holes to lock up the flywheel. Then heat
up the pulley nut with a decent gas blow torch (the high temp MAPP gas type is good, also great for starting BBQ's :wink: ).

It's then easy to remove. Chains are pretty staright forward just follow the manual and line up the marks on the sprokets with the marks on the chains. Renault chains already have the marks. Some replacements don't have the marks but just transfer them (carefully) across with a paint marker.
Keep the old chains in a safe place so if you ever have to go in there again you have them for reference.

Thanks for all your replies. There's a lot of useful info.
It's definatley coming out of the manifold bolt hole. I whipped the spark plugs out and turned it over and there's water pissing out of it. I think I might just pop a new engine in if I can get hold of one and see if I can repair this one later on.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at Eurotech to have a chat about it.
