Hi,

We’re seeing if any Back to the Future/DeLorean owners would be interested in bringing their car to our annual party in the Beaulieu area on 27 June 2026.

It’s a well-attended 80s-themed party (around 800–1000 people) with food, music, and activities throughout the evening. You’d have full access to the event, and arrival would be from around 3pm.

If this sounds like something you’d enjoy being part of, please get in touch!

Thanks!

First Breakdown - Advice / Solutions?

So..
Drove from High Wycombe to Shropshire this weekend and had a breakdown as I was passing through Birmingham.
Clearly, rule 1 is 'don't drive through Birmingham on the hottest day of the year at five o'clock on a Friday afternoon'..!!
However, this was my first breakdown in the car.

As I was nearly through Birmingham (frustratingly), first I heard dodgy whirring noises, then coming off a roundabout she suddenly completely died after some horrendous electricalish whirring noises.
Pretty sure this was the fuel pump having a mad five minutes.
For at least five minutes, turning the key did nothing at all.
After a few more minutes, turning the key turned over the engine (with horrendous noises) but it wouldn't fire.
After a few more minutes, she started but conked out again after going ten yards.
After another ten minutes or so (maybe 25-30 minutes all told?), during which I was on to my breakdown company, she decided to start and I completed the last 30-ish miles and hour of my journey.

So. Questions/advice please!
i/ What was going on? Is this the same as or related to the infamous 'hot start' problem I think I've heard of? Is it usual for this to also result in a breakdown? Was it (theorising here) to do with excess heat causing fuel in fuel pipes to vapourise and 'vapour lock'?

ii/ whatever the problem, does anyone have a solution? should I change my fuel pump? Any other upgrades/ mods I can do?

Further problem: On the plus side, I had my air con looked at a month or so ago and it now works. On the downside, when it's hot, the increased load of putting on the air con and the associated fans pushes the running temperature of the engine up! So when it's really hot, I ironically have to turn off the air con so as to keep the engine cool!!
so, iii/ anyone else had this problem, and did anyone find a radiator / fan / other solution that helps keep all this under control?

My biggest paranoia about running any old car is always to do with overheating.

iv/ Finally, perhaps it's just my imagination, but it seems to me that the warmer the car is, the worse the gearchange gets. Anyone else have this?

It's been a while, hope everyone's well and sorry for just bringing problems to the party..!! :-D

Cheers,

Over 8 years of being obsessed with the car i finally acquired one, she's still a touch red but thats soon to be removed over the winter months, engine runs but has difficulty holding idle (Rich Hutchinson has identified half the issue yesterday being the idle speed motor being seized), frame is solid with a bit of surface rust on the front extension and interior needs light restoration.
I will be vlogging as much of the restoration as i can and posting to the cars instagram page deloreangt.
But.. now comes the paperwork.

Anyone got any tips on filling in the DVLA's V55/5 form or have an example or fresh experience of doing so?
It asks for lots of stuff, including many items 'from the Certificate of Conformity'..
Or it asks for an IVA test. Which I don't think we need to do, do we..?

Lots of this stuff I just don't know, though (HCs or NOx or CO2s, anyone..?) - or is it OK just to leave this stuff blank?

Any guidance gratefully received, an extended period of correspondence with DVLA would be a real ballache..!

Many thanks,
Hi All;

Well, I joined the club a couple of months or so ago (and have been merrily kicking off loads of threads with various queries - thanks to everyone who supplied me with answers, and particularly to Chris W who helped me out with my importation paperwork!) and am now pleased to say that *MY* (OMG!) D has safely arrived!

All done online: searched for and purchased in the US, and then imported. Just keeping my fingers crossed that all is well and there's no major issues!

She certainly runs, but I've had to replace the flat battery. Apparently the guys at the UK import end used jump/boost starters to get her going 3 times (having stalled her on the clutch after the first 2 goes!) and so once they got her on the trailer they left her running!! :-o

Fortunately she kept running whilst on the trailer all the way from Southampton to my house and didn't a/ run out of petrol or b/ massively overheat and explode, so I'm taking that as a good sign. I then managed to drive her safely onto my drive (without stalling!), as you can see..

Have since replaced the battery (absolutely dead!) and given her a couple of trial starts. She starts nicely but seems to run a little roughly - partly I suspect she is low on fuel!
So, I'll put in a gallon or so of nice fresh clean lovely petrol and go again. Will only run her for a little bit to warm up, then I've got a new oil filter and oil to go in as a 'starter for ten' to make sure she's treated nicely before any more extended running..!

And then: lights to change, PAX door handle to fix, then hopefully MOT and paperwork..
In the meantime I'm sure I'll come up with other questions.
Such as...
a/ there's a 'hissing' noise comes from behind the dash as soon as I 'key on'. Could perhaps be the air con working? Is this normal?
Anyone got any clues/ideas/knowledge?
b/ she's tricky to get into reverse. I'm hoping that adjusting the gear cable underneath towards the back will give her a little more freedom to move the stick in that direction and then this'll improve.. am I barking up the wrong tree?
Very grateful for any advice, I'm sure there'll be more!

Oh yes, and I've called her 'Bessie'. Like the Highwayman's horse..

Cheers!
Ivan..
Hmm. Not quite sure I'm getting the 'add picture' thing right here. Could be anything from zero to five pics attached! Let's see..

Hi.
I thought it appropriate to post on the forum the fact that I took my car on it's first (in my ownership) 100+ mile run from Cardiff to Barry then on to the Brecon Beacons and Storey Arms.
It was a very hot day and the car performed very well with the engine temperature not giving any cause for concern.

I did notice the New fuel pump howling away, and I guess that I may need to install a rubber air dam to prevent hot air passing over the fuel tank area? Any advice ?

It certainly brought a lot of smiles, toots, waving and picture taking.
It's been a tough 2 years 9of retirement) on this,my first DeLorean.

At last I no longer spend my day thinking about it lol.

Over the years I've received great support from Chris Williams, and even Chris Parnham managed to lever open my wallet when I purchased an ex pilot car hood from him. I believe that we both own quite a rare DeLorean front grill, but that's a story, to be told by somebody else, on another day.

I've already had some regraining work done by Chris Nicholson, on the drivers Rear Quarter, T section and Chris regrained the hood prior to my purchase.
I'll remove the fascias, sills side lights to enable Chris to go to town on it and then install a new rubber side stripe.

It was never going to be a concourse car, but any modifications made have not been invasive.

Thanks again - it's a reality now, not just a dream (and at times .... nightmare).

After 20 years of wanting - I finally managed to get myself a DeLorean.
Thanks to Chris Williams for putting me in touch wit the owner - I am now the proud owner of VIN 4890.
The car was imported from Chicago in 2014 by Chris Nicholson and converted to RHD for it's new owner.
Since being handed to the new owner - it only drove 1500 miles and has been off the road for the last 2 and a half years.
So it needed a bit of re-commissioning work.
So far the following work is needed - most issues related to the car not being driven for a long time and stored outside under a car cover.

Fuel pump issues - replaced with new pump, boot, pick up pipe reinforced with stainless spring, new filter, new baffle (original in tank incomplete). Now the car starts on the button.
Steering rack issues - missing bottom bracket retainer - Modified Left hand bracket from a round topped to a square topped one to physically hold the rack in place.
Steering notchy and really heavy - discovered lower universal joint had nearly fully seized - new one on order.
Clutch slave cylinder not operational - New one on order - not looking forward to fitting this one!
Brake disks - surface rust - but no pitting, nearly new pads . Hoping a bit of driving will refresh these - otherwise I'll be replacing them
Handbrake poor - pads look fine so possibly needs adjusting.
Tyres - Front and back tyres cracked - Looking at options for replacement - quite like the look of Cooper Cobra Radial for the rears. Anyone got them?
Engine - runs a bit rich on start-up - but settles down when warm - Need to look into this.
HVAC - fan runs - but no air coming into cabin, also AC needs re-gassing. possible vacuum issue?
Craig radio not working - plan to exchange this for a modern DAB model - Controversial !

Overall - the car is in fantastic condition - the frame is absolutely solid, the bodywork panels are in perfect condition - and all the pipes and perishable items have previously all been replaced. It will be a car that I will be proud of when it's all finished.

With the exception of the clutch slave cylinder, I cant believe how easy it is to work on the car. I'm really enjoying the puzzle of problem solving and repairing all the little bits. It's a great distraction from the current situation the country is in. I have had so many positive chats with general members of the public - who just love the car.

Overall a great experience!

I attach a photos and hope to meet up with you all on one of the club events in the future!

Hi again, everyone.
I'm hoping for an arrival in the coming weeks..! Fingers crossed.

Obviously I'm aware that once it's here, before hitting the road I'll need (as a minimum) to change some headlights, fit (or make work) some rear fog light(s), and get it MOT'd. This then enables registration, etc.
I've been perusing the parts threads and can't find anything definitive that is recently posted, so here goes with my questions:

i/ what's the latest (best option/what/where to get/how to fit) on the headlight situation?

ii/ what have people done with regards the fog light thing?

iii/ maybe an answer to ii/: Is the DeLorean Go foglight mod kit at the following link any good / easy to fit?
https://www.deloreango.com/us/uk-fog-lig...n-kit.html

As for the rest, I'll see what my local garage make of it when I roll up for MOT..!
Ooh, one final one:

iv/ do I recall seeing someone advertising for a custom-fit car cover..?

As ever, grateful for any help or suggestions!

Cheers!

This is interesting!
Some of you may have twigged that i'm trying to import a car at the moment.
Whilst trying to lay groundwork with HMRC and get an 'advanced tariff rate' ruling, I came across this;
https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/search-fo...y=delorean
Interestingly, a 'Smokey and the Bandit' flavoured car that I had spotted whilst looking!
Do we know who is bringing this one in?! Anyone want to 'fess up?!
On the plus side this makes a ruling that DMCs are a '9705' commodity and thus deffo fall in the 'collectible' bracket..
Coming soon to a garage near..?!

Hi, speaking to Trans Glob Logistics about importing and they have said:
"In order to prove that the vehicle was made in the UK, we would need some for of proof in the form of a certificate of Origin, which you can get from the British Motor Museum https://www.britishmotormuseum.co.uk/archive/heritage-certificates".
However, upon visiting the BMM website, DeLorean is not a marque that they list!
I have emailed them to see if they can otherwise help at all.

In the absence of that, however, has anyone in the club any experience of finding any such certificate, or does perchance the club 'go into bat' on behalf of members to 'prove' (/certify?) that all DMCs (other than a few really late ones built in the US from parts after the liquidation) were made in the UK?

I see, for reference, that DVLA will take into account a certification from Members' Clubs regarding vehicle registrations (see link below), so I wondered if the Club had similar swing on the 'when it was built' topic..

Or is there a document somewhere which simply lists VIN numbers and shows where they were built?

Grateful, as ever, for any help or advice!
Cheers,

So after 3.5 years of ownership. and 1.5 years of retirement, I can say at last that 11789 passed it's MOT with no advisories.
The car has been dragged kicking n screaming back to life what with oil light issues (the sender was stuck inside the engine), Cylinder head, brake issues to name just a few. Still some work to do (it'll never end I know)

My mate who helped me push the car into the garage, said that it looks a lot different to the Chicken coop he helped push lol

Thanks to members here who helped particularly the two Chris's - they know why / how.

My 95 year old Mam has gone through the ringer these last 3 months just as Covid kicked in and suffered so bad with leg issues I thought she might have to be admitted .... but as you can see, after a surprise stop at her house she ignored her "Covid lockdown hairstyle" and posed for a picture.

Hi All

my resto of 52222 continues and i will post some pics.

if you guys decide to paint strip a Delorean, be prepared for a very long job.

my car generally has 3 layers of paint, i am using Frosts aircraft grade stripper gel.

liberally 'paint' it on, cover with clingfilm, leave for ten minutes, and i little bit of one layer comes off!. using phone cards as scrapers!.

and the bottom coat, that stuff i think was used to protect the shuttle on re-entry. it is sooo hard to shift.

now i know the door and rear panel had a little damage. Chris N seems to think it unlikely he can repair the door.

rear panel not sure yet. however a major setback this weekend....looks like the drivers front wing had damage. i am not quite sure of the extent. i am stripping it and underneath the 'undercoat' i am finding a grey i think spray filler. covers about 1/4 of wing near front. the paint stripper seems to soften it a little and it shaves off a tiny bit at a time.

i hope Chris can do something with it as i know this panel is NLA.

on a positive, frame looks good as do most suspension. even brakes and handbrake work. Alloy wheels now refurbished and new tyres, but i am going to wait until all paint stripping done before i fit them. Current wheels are spoked and have central spinners... i hope hubs have not been modified.

Engine stripped down to the VOD. about to paint it, and have had intake soda blasted. Not sure PO was doing but everything electric has been disconnected. Even the heaterbox actuators are hanging loose!.

no water in car either... i have yet to investigate but i suspect the heater matrix is shot.

anyway will sort some pics.

my resto of 52222 continues and i will post some pics.

if you guys decide to paint strip a Delorean, be prepared for a very long job.

my car generally has 3 layers of paint, i am using Frosts aircraft grade stripper gel.

liberally 'paint' it on, cover with clingfilm, leave for ten minutes, and i little bit of one layer comes off!. using phone cards as scrapers!.

and the bottom coat, that stuff i think was used to protect the shuttle on re-entry. it is sooo hard to shift.
