Its a bit of a long shot but does anyone on here know if is possible to get hold of a governor? Just the casing with the generator would be fine. Any pointers gratefully received.

anyone got any ideas on what could be causing the issue?

My car has an autobox problem.
I had my doubts about the integrity of the box when I bought the project car, judging from the fact that the project had a spare governor.

The first indication of my "problem" was when driving it home.
The car had developed a whine and initially I put it down to the silencer box which gave up up the ghost. It drove ok for a few miles, however, I eventually lost drive in all gears and had to be recovered by the AA.

I later found out that by removing fuse 13 I could get drive in 3rd? and reverse. My limited DeLorean knowledge suggested to me a governor problem?

I changed the governor with my spare, tested by electronics guru Tony Cole

Removing the sump, I checked the ohmage on the solenoids and they are fine. I installed a New filter and fresh fillup of 4.5 litres of ATF.

Fuse 13 is fine.

After it was all buttoned up, when I select 1 or 2, there is a high pitched whine with no drive.

When I Select drive or reverse, it drives but just 3rd (I guess) and reverse (see later video).

So I'm thinking that the gearbox is Fuc .....faulty?

The photo shows a small round pin (next to a 10mm spanner) that was stuck to a magnet in the sump.

This is the first auto car I've had in 48 years of driving just manual/stick cars, so this problem is not one I can think through

So my question is .... are there any recommendations for somebody in the UK, that I could drop the box to for a rebuild please?

Edit. I tried to upload a video showing the problem but to no avail.
Hiya Guys

After a quick conversation with Rich and a few others at the Ambergate meet I decided to dive into the Auto box oil change on my car, Ive posted a few pictures here, opinions welcomed on the condition etc and the full throttle switch as well.

So i drained the oil down and boy did it need doing it smelt vile burnt and very dark in colour im guessing not been changed for a long while.

The filter looked grubby and the magnet had onviousl done its infact the iron fillings gung looked almost alive

The original sump gasket looked like a home made paper gasket doubled up but the cork and filter looked pretty original ish.

So I left it to drain overnight fitted new cork gasket and filter and new cork gasket (with a smear or RTV) then resealed and filled with nice fresh oil, I have cycled the gearbox through drive 1 2 and reverse ready for a run out this afto.

But while doing this I though I would check on the full throttle kick down switch after a quick conversation with Rich on sunday, I just wanted to check that I was in the right area because at full throttle the switch is miles off of any contact with a lever to activate it

Leaving me a little puzzled.
Additionally, however;

Is the 'final drive' or diff separate from the gearbox? If so, presumably there's another pair of drain/fill plugs to find?

And if I wanted to change the oil in there as well, how much litreage should I expect, and is it the same stuff as for the gearbox?
Grateful for advice,
I've been told that the gearbox ran out of oil which caused the damage.
Failing that, if someone could recommend a good gearbox repair shop in UK or Ireland( I'm in Northern Ireland).

I've been told that the gearbox ran out of oil which caused the damage.

Any help or pointers appreciated,
Thanks

Hi , has anybody done these seals in here? This seems like the opportune time to do them and there is some oil wetting there so I think they're weeping ( as am I ).

It looks like there is a roll pin to tap out then a castellated but to undo but I assume that will also lose end load on the diff.

Also does anyone have a part cross-reference for the seals?

Hi all,

After putting my car back together last week, and now the snow is finally gone, I thought I'd take it out for a drive.

Drives well - no issues apart from the gearbox - for some reason 4th gear will not engage

It's like the gear is not there at all - no grinding etc just feels like theres nothing there - like a wall, so you can even move the stick toward the gear.

I tried taking the centre console top off as the car has a weird metal gaitor, just to make sure it wasn't that, and to check if anything was stuck in the linkage at the gear stick end but it all looked ok.

All the other gears work fine without issue - no slipping etc

Any ideas? It doesn't stop me driving it as I can skip it, but it would be good to get it sorted! I'll have to get it on some ramps to have a look underneath when I have a chance.

Cheers!

Hi all,

I thought if I end up having to refurbish my master cylinder, I'll also want to change the hose from the reservoir to the cylinder.

The issue I first have is that one of the rivnuts is spinning (awkward one on bottom right of panel) - I've bought a special countersink end cutter to help me remove it - need to get the screw out first though.

The question I have is - why are there foam gaskets and a load of sealant around this panel?

I've been told that was done in the factory, but why does this panel need foam gaskets and sealant? Is it to stop petrol fumes from entering the front storage area?

Seems like overkill with the above and the number of screws, but I assume there must be a good reason.

Cheers!

Hi all,

I posted on the other threas on rebuild kits about getting new seals for my girling master cylinder.

I was wondering if it worth getting the unit resleeved? There is a company called pastparts that do it, but wanted to know if anyone else has done it before?

I'm not sure what the state of the inside of the master cylinder will be, hence looking at this.

Cheers!

Just a heads up that I found a rebuild kit for the clutch master cylinder. I have not had to touch mine since I got the car 18 years ago but recently noticed a weep of fluid from it.
I remember rebuilding a friends with a kit from Martin (I think) back in the day.

Anyway got a kit from these guys for £14
http://www.northwestclassic.co.uk/

Part number SP2139

Cover boot is different but will fit even though it's tricky.

Hello all

Hopefully a quick one.

I am trying to remove my leather gear gait or to send off to get a replacement leather one made up with black leather and red stitching.

I have tried to get 'physical' with the gear knob by trying to unscrew it, but don't want to put to much force into it.

Does anybody know how these gear knobs are removed? Do I need to 'man up' and use 2 white knuckles and a grunt?

Many thanks in advance.
