Strange Welding On Engine Block
#1
Just been working on another engine that I pulled out of a running (perfectly well) Volvo 260 and as part of it I always clean and paint the block with glyptal paint. Anyhow I noticed whilst cleaning this one it has a couple of strange welds in two places on the block. This is not a normal place for them to go and having stripped it down there is no damage to the block so I was wondering why thy may be there? If done at the factory why?

Those are just little recesses. They don't go through, but they ARE pockets for crap to collect (only about 1cm deep though). So maybe whoever before you were trying to "fill" them in?! Maybe an experiment to see how well they could fill recesses on the engine block, knowing the whole engine is basically one big crud catcher?

My best guess I'm afraid.

Yep, it's a strange one as I have pulled loads of these engines to bits to either build others or repair and it's not a 'normal' place for the blocks to rot. As I say it came out of a running car though without any leaks so I don't know, just seemed a bit odd. I will try and post a better picture as well. Though it may explain the two snapped exhaust manifold studs and cross threaded spark plug I have had to sort out with this one Angry
