BTTF Car Fails MOT :(
#1
Not sure how the back has been lowered or is adjustable unless it has dampers like SPAX on you need to put pictures up of how it is now. OE springs are available for both front and rear, possibly best option with all the extra's on your car to go back to a completely stock set up?
I recently sent a complete set of new old stock springs to Darren C for mesuring ETc at a place he was looking at to get some remanufactured, however NOS springs can be purchased from DMCH or I'm sure Chris @PJ Grady or indeed MartinG may have them. Any garage should be able to do them, there not difficult at all.

Hi Steven,

Here is a link for springs DMC Europe sell, it will give you a rough idea on what the cost might be. Approx £130 on current exchange rates.

The only trouble with these spings (for Steven anyway) is that these are lowering ones for the front of the car, it will drop a normal ride height (as from the factory) down to a lower stance. I would suggest with Stevens car with all the weight of the BTTF stuff on it that it needs to be as per the factory. I do have a complete set of 4 OE new springs if you want them.
But I really would try to get pics of the back end of the suspension to try and find out whats fitted before deciding on anything.

Any decent garage mechanic should be able to swap a set of springs! I'm with Chris W on this, all the BTTF stuff is weighing it down. New/ secondhand original spec springs should be fine. Springs can and do sag with age. ( on any car) Being too low has brought on your addition problems.
These problem are worse when you need to get it on and off a trailer.

Thats why I should leave technical andwers to the experts Wink

Out of interest, how much do the props on the front of the car weigh? I can understand the back being weighed down its prop heavy.

To give you an idea mine sits at 25 1/4" at the front from floor to wheel arch and 27" at the rear. OE (but 30 year old springs), most do vary a little but yes yours one does seem very low. I guess the comment is aimed at me to do them, unfortunately I cant 1, because I have just come out of a 5 day hospital/operation and am only on light duties (watching telly/eating Etc) 2, I'm not allowed to work on other peoples cars for profit as part of my job, 3, Don't have the time if I was well enough. But in the main it's down to Number 1. As I mentioned I do have a set of four new old stock OE height springs though I can sell you if required. ANY competent garage should be able to do these for you (again depends on what you have) there is a 'how to' in the members section for the front springs, the rears are even easier.
I really would try to get it to a garage (don't you have a trusted one that works on all your cars?) you still need to get the brake pipes done (we have S/Steel flexi ones in stock if you need them) to get the MOT.

If you really get stuck, I am based near Haywards Heath and a have a workshop where I can change the springs in.
I have just changed the front springs on Vin3320 and found it to be easy, as long as you get the clamps in the right place.
So i do have a pair of front OEM springs available, but to me it sounds like the rear needs jacking up more, so you would be best getting the set from Chris. new springs on the front only would exacerbate the headlight alignment problem.
After fitting, the front will need a tracking session and this would normally set you back £26 from a place like HiQ. However this is not a full 4 wheel alignment setup as recommended on the forum.

Let me know if you need help.

No wonder you have trouble with speed humps Etc, yours sits nearly 3" lower at the front than mine Shock
My guess (and it was a common mod) before people knew better is that the old front springs have been cut and placed on the rear and the backs moved to the front, but who knows! Hear is a good topic that shows lots of different ride heights and spring options:
