Hey my UK friends, I seek a translation.

I've heard the term on Top Gear: "gaffer tape".
Is that what we call "duct tape" here in the States?
..and what is, what profession is, a "gaffer".

Been curious about that for a while.

*** Momentary off topic discussion ***

Yes gaffer tape is a slang phrase for duct tape...

A gaffer is another term for the boss.. Smile

I'm the man to answer this one! A gaffer in film/TV production is basically the head electrician. He reports to the DP (Director of Photography). So the director says I want the camera here, framing the shot like this. The DP sets the camera up and decides where the lights/flags/bounce goes to make the shot look as good as possible. The DP tells the gaffer what he wants and the gaffer and his team physically move the lights/plug it all in/set it all up.

Simplified explanation of the workflow, but that's pretty much it Big Grin

So, when the gaffer secures the various cords cables etc to the floor with duct tape, is that where the term "gaffer tape" comes from?

...so this "gaffer tape" quest came from dialogue from an older episode of Top Gear.

They were mocking a car they had taped down some rear louvers on, and I think Jeremy stated that it looked like a DeLorean, and James asked, something like, "..so they held the louvers with gaffer's tape?". Used in that context, I took it to mean "gaffers tape" was like US duct tape. ...but based on what you all are saying, it sounds like there's another layer of meanng related to ...a trade? ....a supervisor?.... Uhg, my language curiosity sometimes gets the best of me.

Anyway, back to the blog.
I've updated eBay sales through Q1, 2009, so the tables and graphs now reflect 29 months of DMC-12s sold on ebay.
Check it when you get a chance: http://delorean2109.blogspot.com/2008/03...-ebay.html

Thanks Ozzie, interesting stuff.

As for the gaffer tape chat - yes it is different to Duct tape, yes it is often used for securing cables on the floor (as well as attaching just about anything to just about anything else)

DeLorean DMC-12 eBay Sales Trends, has been updated for Q1 2010. Good news for sellers, and current values.

Summary:

Charts & Table here

2010 Q1 Ebay Sales Trends:
As the graph and table above show, the last quarter seemed to have found the bottom for DMC-12 sales on eBay. There is a notable pickup this quarter. Here is a summary of observations:
  • In just the first quarter of 2010, there were 21 DeLoreans sold, which is nearly half of all D's sold in 2009 (52).
  • All measured stats (low, avg, high) are double digit increases from all of 2009.
  • The most expensive DeLorean sold (6032, $33K) was more expensive than any D sold in 2009.
  • Recorded 4 consequitive $18K sales in two weeks (20074:$18K, 6460:$18.5, 1035:$18.2, 4113: $18.3).
  • The most cars sold were in California (5), followed by Michigan and Arizona (with 2 each).

In closing...
The US economy seems to be very slowing improving from 2009, and consumer spending appears to be shadowing that as well. While the numbers above certainly support that, I also would not discount at least two DeLorean selling in the $50K range at very public auctions, which may have influenced recent (and future) selling prices.
