Unavailable car parts
#1
On my car, like a lot of deloreans the plastic housing on the drivers door for the door lock is broken. I think this is the part "ESCUTCHEON LH 101889". This is not available at DMC Houston.
Anyway I work in a company which supply special steel for making plastic parts for cars i.e. the plastic moulds.
Would it be worth investigating getting a batch of these parts produced? Anyone know where to get the design drawings?

This is one of the parts that DMCH are about to launch back on to the market, along with; Dash/Binnacle/middle section of the car where the ashtray sits. Although these parts have been promised for a long-long time, so it may be worth holding of investing to much money into it just yet.

I need one of these.
It would be nice if these were put into production again.

The difficult part is getting someone to make them i.e. there needs to be sufficient quantity to warrant production.
The process is as follows: A CAD drawing is prepared of the piece, a bit of mould steel is tooled to the dimensions, a plastic injection machine melts plastic pellets and injects them into the mould. There's nothing special. All this can be done in a one-stop-shop business.

Stupid thing with DMCH and reproducing parts is that they are made far to cheaply and seem to take far to long to be made in the first place.

The new binnacles and dashes have been in pre-production for over 4 years now, I have seen a binnacle made from fiberglass here in Ireland and it took 1 week to make! all it needs now is some fine finishing and then covered to match the dash. If this is a success then countless binnacles can be made for a 1/4 of the price of the one DMCH will try to sell us.

This is the part Kevin's talking about :-

http://www.delorean.com/store/popup.asp ... 101889.jpg

If you look at the main page:-
http://www.delorean.com/store/p-9905-escutcheon-lh.aspx DMCH has noted 'improved part'. Nothing wrong with being ambitious... but it isn't even in the prototype stages yet. The $0.00 confirms too that it isn't available.

You can't even add it to a wish list (that DMCH could view) to let them know that you would like one. It would be an interesting feature to gauge the amount of current demand for the part...

Some products can be made quickly to look like the real thing. How they look a year down the line after heat, cold, UV and other exposure is the real test. Some plastics become brittle/fade with time so having it match the OEM sheen for the 'concours' owners is I expect not as easy...

I also need one as mine has split into two pieces (although it stays put okay).

I remember seeing the Prototype of these, plus the dashboard and the binnacle 2 years ago at the DCS2006.

I have no idea whats stoping them being made ?!?!?!
