Could be wear in the distributor shaft making the rotor hit the dizzy cap contacts? That would speed up with rpm and get excessive under load.

I would say it's a coincidence and it's your fuel pump making a whine as it sits right underneath the boot latch.  Put some fresh petrol in and see if it goes away... might be low fuel level.  If not...

I replaced my distributor cap recently too. There was only one notch on mine... making it clear which way it fitted.
