Daft Question..? Gearbox =/ Diff? - lordivanhoe - 15 Mar 2022

So, was thinking of changing my [manual] gearbox oil (seen the threads, Comma 75/90 GL5 purchased, got 5 litres and expecting to use 3-3.7).

Additionally, however;

Is the 'final drive' or diff separate from the gearbox?  If so, presumably there's another pair of drain/fill plugs to find?

And if I wanted to change the oil in there as well, how much litreage should I expect, and is it the same stuff as for the gearbox?

Grateful for advice,

Cheers!

There’s only one drain plug, and one fill plug on a manual GB.

Undo fill plug a bit to make sure you can. Then empty out from drain plug.
Replace drain plug once empty and happy to do so. Then remove fill plug completely and fill until oil start spilling out fill hole with car on all fours. Replace fill plug. Begin clean up operation. Have shower and spend 3 days trying to eradicate smell out of every orifice you somehow manage to get GB oil on along the way.

Yup, that should just about cover it.

Ha, yep that sums it up,  but stress the 'make sure you can remove the fill plug first'

Just a note (in case anyone interested) that I did indeed go ahead and change my gearbox oil.
No problems, job was a good (if slow) one.
But my old 'garage' hoodie still smells funny two months and three washes later!  It really is weird stuff...  :-D

On a related matter.....

..THE AUTO has separate diff oil.

. I discovered this to my cost when my diff 'collapsed'....(on a previous car many years ago) ..Ironicily i'd recently sold my complete spare, brand new auto gearbox to a member in NI.

He kindly did me a deal where I bought back his old diff. But It was still a massive job to change it.......Auto box out...taken to a specialist gear-box man (Rose..? Near Nottingham). who sorted it all out. Then all I had to do was re-fit it.....about 3mm of spare space....a horrible job, and that was using my lift.       My chum in NI did it on his drive.   He has my full admeration.

The moral of this story......check the level of your diff and gerabox oils.... Angry
