RE: re vin 5222 now on its way to UK - steve.s - 29 May 2020 Hi All i keep forgetting to update... restoration of 5222 is slow but sure!. thanks to Chris P for the tank, now built up with all new kit inside, and ready to go into car. old closing plate came up a treat, now cleaning the whole area where the tank sits....i dont like to built things dirty. sent lots bolts brackets etc to be re-plated, and had the intake and various other parts vapour blasted. trying to get engine looking as best as i can, not immaculate but good hopefully. hopefully if i get running i can then clean up the aircon compressor and 2 valve covers.... Rear bumper off and cleaned up the bare end...Vod painted and now has new heater pipe, rebuilt pump, plugs, HT leads, injector hoses, new oil. Have new fuel filter and auto box filter ready to fit. oil sender at bottom left of engine leaking oil so have one to fit. as soon as my tank is back in will be pumping clean fuel through, and injectors into glass jars. injectors i have de-rusted and cleaned up...will see if they still work. so hopefully soon will try that first start......exciting times!. car jacked up at front at the moment...odd though front left wheel will not turn, right does freely...more investigation required. Thankfully the frame is very good, as are the springs and suspension components, even the calipers look ok, so i think it must have been garaged at least some of its life or warmer climate. interior wiring bit of a mess, but it does turn over....squirted plenty of WD40 down intakes and spark plug holes. some paint been stripped but drivers door and driver rear panel not......taken off T panel and took it to soda blasters as a test piece.....will be interesting to see how it is... so....just waiting yet another package from Dgo... I know you have put WD40 down the bores but does the engine turn over freely anyway? My fav way for flushing the fuel system is (now you have done the tank) when it's all back in place disconnect the main fuel line from the metering head and bodge it to the return and flush through, disposing of the fuel coming down the return to the tank (clearly disconnected) then change the filter. Not sure what if anything you have done with the metering head as yet, but so long as you can get the plunger out you can often get them cleaned up enough to work. I did the injector check on my car the other day and the 3 on the left bank were pathetic (car ran ok though) the 3 on the right bank were ok however. So have changed them all for good luck. Hi Chris Thank you for the reply. i have took apart the metering unit, but kept the black unit and the flap thing together...the bottom of the unit with a dozen M6 or so bolts i sent to be vapour blasted and came up a treat... i also had the butterfly unit vapour blasted on the outside, and again looks great... just waiting for a Dgo gasket to put things back together. the flap unit i have not vapour blasted as i thought it looked fragile, and finely balanced...so am just going to clean it with wire brushes. once i have built it up i was going to connect tank and flush through to the main fuel how to engine, then change the filter and flush again. then connect the metering unit, injectors into glass jars, and return into a jar near the tank, then pump plenty of fuel around. my problem is when i take something off i want it looking good so spend ages refurbing it!. but it slows down my starting her up work. one front wheel will not turn (towed in into my garage) so need to investigate. the passenger side spins fine... calipers look good did you keep your old injectors and fancy selling a couple of one or two of mine are poor? at the moment could do without another £300 on injectors, as theres lots to spend on, and i always like to refurb something if i can. my old injectors the heads were a bit crusty, so de-rusted them, cleaned them up in WD40 etc, and soaked in petrol so they look ok, will see if they fire reasonably . i hooked them up to a fuel pump i had....but it only reaches about 3 bar and they would not fire!. Thankyou Regards Steve RE: re vin 5222 now on its way to UK - Chris Williams - 02 Jun 2020 Quote:did you keep your old injectors and fancy selling a couple of one or two of mine are poor?To be honest I would rather keep hold of the 3 good spares, the bad ones are in the scrap bin (but your welcome to them). You can get them much cheaper (circa £30 each if you shop around) mine came from a local Bosch specialist and worked out at just over 30 each, they may have been getting rid of them as they were the last in stock. However they do a lot of re-furbishing of K-Jet stuff, just search for Ken Mills Injection. Though they do also pop up on ebay occasionally: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BOSCH-0437502022-INJECTOR/402093434496?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649 RE: re vin 5222 now on its way to UK - Stuart Rees - 02 Jun 2020 Sounds like you're making good progress Steve. I would take the metering head off the fuel mixture unit (flappy thing) it's just 3 long screws (be sure to WD40 them first) Do this, to check the plunger isn't stuck... or to see if the O ring is intact. Be careful though not to drop the metal plunger as it could slip out of the metering head easily and damage on a hard floor. I've also just bought some injectors from Latvia @£28 each. You need the (0 437 502 022) ones. Saying that an Ultrasonic cleaning company like this http://www.injectortune.co.uk/ Could clean them up like new. I've no experience with them and as long as it's cheaper than replacing of course. Best of luck |
