Alternator urgently needed - Guinney1971 - 02 Sep 2016

can anyone point us towards an alternator for sale at sensible money?

Sorbet (#6772, automatic) needs a new one, preferably before the main club event next weekend........

RE: Alternator urgently needed - Rissy - 02 Sep 2016

I've been doing research on this very part myself this year, and so far I came up with dead ends (save just going for a 105A variant, which i'm sure would be okay anyway).  Trying to figure out the exact same secret 110A model which Martin and Ed Uding do...?  well, I can't figure it out.

Maybe someone else can/has?

Here's my entire research findings.  I've no idea if it's one of these or a completely different one.  All I know is it *should* be the same as the Renault Alpine A310 2.8V6 1982-1985  I'll let you/people do the further research...  I'd like to hear back  Wink

I just came across the same list - ironically from a thread you contributed to a year ago elsewhere (Rissy).

What's sensible money, Claire? £175 seems pretty good.

John at Special T Auto has some nice looking upgraded alternators. 110/120amp for $139.00

It's just the shipping and timescale that might be against you.

I notice he does a 140amp as well.

So i've been doing some further research, including getting in touch with Renault themselves.  The correct Alternator can be sourced from Renault (shipped over from France) but they want over £400 for it!

So I've done some further searching, and found some suitable cross reference numbers.  I've confirmed the original Renault part number (from my list above) is: 77 00 780 774.

This cross references against a ton of other manufacturer's units, but the cheapest i've found is the CEVAM unit, which can currently be picked up via Ebay, shipped from France at the following link.  The CEVAM part number (included for when the link goes down) is "4302".

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191696513399?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Obviously, the pulley on it will not be correct (unless you believe the fact the advert advertises is as coming with a "V belt" pulley, even though it contradicts itself again by specifying 5 ribs), so this will need to be changed.  I don't have the shaft diameter, or the method of keying required for a pulley to fit the unit, but as far as the pulley is concerned, it needs to be a 10mm wide pulley to accommodate the 9.5mm width of the belt (cross reference belt - Gates 7495 used as an example) and a 36 degree wall angle in the "V".  I don't know what is typical for a pulley diameter either i'm afraid.  But does it matter?  I'm not sure.

Perhaps a pulley kit for an old Lucas alternator like the below link, will fit?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LUCAS-FAN-AND-PULLEY-KIT-54202055-UZB931-UZB907-FOR-OLDER-LUCAS-ACR-ALTERNATORS-/381753384439?hash=item58e2465df7:g:-A0AAOSwp5JWXtfV

Ultimately, it requires someone to have faith and to buy one and let us all know how they get on with fitting it.  I'd do it myself, but i'm a bit hard up right now, and don't actually need a new alternator right now.  If anyone "goes for it", then please....give some feedback and let us know.  I've done the hard bit narrowing it down this far.  Wink

Have you seen this one mentioned on one of the Facebook forums also: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281926675481?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Seems a popular (and sensibly priced) option if we can get a UK X-ref for it

I'm not sure about that one. If America says its ok, then it probably is. It's often difficult to match up American stuff with European counterparts.

For instance, the Bosch cross reference I have for the CEVAM listed above is this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alternateur-neuf-alt0185-remplace-Bosch-0986040041-/351079311892?hash=item51bdf52a14:g:PH0AAOSwJcZWfJP8

Bosch 0986 040 041

You'll see from the Ebay listing, that there are many cross referenced parts.

Buying anything from America and having it shipped over though is always gonna bump up the cost. This one you've linked is still gonna cost up upwards of £127 by the time you've paid all your duties etc. This is still comparative, maybe even slightly more expensive than getting my suggested one from France.

Anyway, just offering up choice to people. What they choose to do, or who they choose to buy from is a decision they can make for themselves.

RE: Alternator urgently needed - Guinney1971 - 08 Sep 2016

Hi all,

all sorted, Phill took the alternator off our spare Espace 2.1 TD engine, and got it to fit. Its connected up and working perfectly - and it was free!

He's going to do a write up for the magazine on how he did it.

Best wishes,
