Rear Crank Seal - andyd - 19 Feb 2014

Hi

Can anyone recommend a UK supplier for a good quality rear crankshaft seal?

Or Renault/ Volvo part numbers?

Cheers, thanks in advance,

andy

"Rear" really meaning front!!

ie. The one inside the bellhousing, behind the flywheel.

I recently got one from Ed (14.72 Euro) not got around to fitting it as yet  the only markings on it are 80 100 13 I guess that's probably the size going by a rough check with a ruler (but have not checked properly)

Well, its not a job one takes lightly, or does just for fun...

Those are the dimensions, thanks Chris.

I have got one from GSF, picking it up later.

Chris, does yours have ribs on the outside, as per the pic on Ed's site? And what colour is it?

Thanks a lot,

a

The one supplied by DMC (US) is of a much higher quality than the generic one available in the UK or indeed the over-priced pieces of utter doodoo Renault will sell you.

Just because DMC carry them doesn't mean Ed does.

Interesting, thanks Martin.

What makes them better? Is it the material, or a design feature of the "DMCH" seal that makes it better??

I can also get a Reinz one, over the generic GSF I will pick up later. I tend to think that the Reinz one will be better, but only because its a recognised quality name. And we all know that quality names can be bought, and what was good 5 years ago may not be good now. (eg QH bearings I hear)

What should a good seal look like?? (Are there ribs on the outside??). Alternatively, is there a preferred brand to use?

I do not want to do the job more than once!

Info much appreciated, thanks,

A picture tells a thousand words and all that. It does also say: TCVLY on it whatever that is!

ooh err, with a quote like that could be branded Durex, lol
If you google tcvly seal it seems to be a Chinese seal company. I'm sure Ed has tried and used them before.

The one I got from GSF was Elring branded.

Smooth sides, single lipped.

Opinions on this?

For anyone who has fitted one, which did you fit?

To anyone who has fitted one, and it subsequently leaked, what did it look like?

Opinions on this one? Will post pics of the Reinz one when I get it.

Re: Rear Crank Seal - Chris Williams - 21 Feb 2014

Although I have fitted probably half a dozen of these for either myself or helping others I actually cant remember! Sorry that's not much help. I do remember the first one I did I got from DMCH but don't remember what it looked like.

Re: Rear Crank Seal - andyd - 21 Feb 2014

Elring seals don't get a very good review on the Volvo forums...

Re: Rear Crank Seal - stunned_monkey - 21 Feb 2014

What he said ^ This is the generic one you can buy for about a fiver and they've rubbish. The brown ribbed one above looks like the good one DMCH supplied. It's much more difficult to fit than the generic ones because it's much tighter on the lip.

Re: Rear Crank Seal - andyd - 21 Feb 2014

Thanks Martin, I wont be fitting this one then!!

Lets see what the Reinz one looks like...

cheers
