Door retension - Savetheclocktower - 02 Dec 2013

Hey all,

My driverside door has decided it fancies a droop. I was going to order some new struts but am wondering if its worth re torquing it?

Anyone have any experience in this or will to help ?

Rich

Hi Rich,

A good bit of advice I was once given. Open your door, then push it back down to almost closed, but not on the latch. Release the door, if it bounces open then stays around 12inch open, it's your struts and a simple replacement job.

Well it defiantly stays partially open. I'm getting some parts brought over from the US. Any suggestions on UK based struts before I order over there.
Thanks,
Rich

I went with Ed from DMC Europe. I will say that my first set were leaking oil, but my second set have been perfect. He was great to deal with 8)

Nice one, thanks. Think they are cheaper if I get in the states and get my friend to bring over in his Luggage Wink

No problem at all, that's what we're all here for, to share knowledge! Sweet looking D Smile

Hi Rich, Always try new struts before adding more torsion to the bars as my cars previous owner over tightened the torsion bars with weak struts and they were a bit urgent opening when I put new struts on!

Try swapping struts between doors to see if you get the same symptoms. Also let the doors hang without struts to see if they behave the same... the torsion bars alone should hold the door JUST off the latches.

I like the word urgent there  i.e. almost knocked your head clean off Shock

SpecialT'Autos door struts seem to get very good reviews, I have them and found them to be very good. Remember the struts are not as good in cold weather so yours maybe OK come the summer (well for a week or two that we have)

Agree with this all the way..... I had to adjust both my doors as they were still at original setting/marks never adjusted after new struts going in.
If you have to adjust them make sure you have a helping hand as the torsion bars are under serious twist even with the door fully open. Firstly mark/scribe the torsion bar position at the ends under the trim. Using a large pull bar 1/2'' ,extension & allen key socket to hold the tension on the end bar, whilst undoing the 13mm x2 head bolts holding It in place, (important)this all done with the door held up & supported or proped up. So one a strong lad to hold the tension and one to undo the 2 bolts once undone move to the next spline.

For a lazy door that opens and has to be pushed up fully every time -one spline adjustment should be enough...for a door that struggles with that 12'' lift 2 spline movement required. All done with GOOD struts

CAUTION...the torsion bar tension can catch you by surprise when undone and doors fully open ...so be careful.

Best of luck hope it all works out for you.

Thanks everyone. Really good advice all round. Will order some struts and see how I go from there I think.
