piston stiff when rebuilding caliper - steve.s - 15 May 2008

Hi

is this normal.

took pistons out, fully cleaned them. bit of crud behind.

so left the middle seal inplace (were rebuilt 6 months ago)

put new fluid on the piston, slid into place but had to use a spanner across the top and put a fair bit of weight to force the piston down.

the second one went better, slid slowly then shot in.

is this normal, or are these too stiff?.

thanx

I'd say they were too stiff if you had to push it in using that much force.

I wonder if you have the incorrect seals in.
Remove them and compare them to the diameter of the piston.
They should just be slightly larger in diameter.

I think that's quite normal, it may be that you were not pushing the piston completely vertical with your spanner method.

I've done front calipers many times, and if you don't push the piston back in straight then they can be quite stiff.
