master cylinder seal kit number?? - delorean12uk - 21 Feb 2008

Good evening everyone, in my attempts to get this second car of mine running for the spring so Dirty Tony and I can drive up down York road in Southend chatting up young ladies, I seem to encounter one problem after another. I have just refurbished all the calipers and it will seem now the master cylinder has gone pair shaped, why? I don't know, it must be the joy's of owning a Delorean. would any of you fellow members know the Lucas Girling seal kit number for the master cylinder?? I believe the master cylinder is off a Hillman Avenger, but I would be grateful for any information. I do believe in miracles, and it will be one if I manage to get this car running and MOTed for this years season!!! Best regards.

Hi Jay... Seal kit for Clutch m/c is no longer available. Newies from DeLorean.com or Ed. Brake master can be replaced with Saab 900 (50/50 split though)

Cheers Mart for the information. Are you saying that I can put a Saab 900 mastercylinder on as a replacement to the original Delorean one, or I can use a Saab 900 seal kit on the original Delorean one??? A man of your immense knowledge, you wouldn't just happen to have the Girling seal kit number would you?? How have you been anyway?? long time no hear!!!

Hey dude... so we're talking brake m/c

The difference between the original 68/32 (from memory) Saab 90 one and the 900 is the springs that separate the two plungers. So you can dismantle a new 900 one and swap the springs for the ones out of your old one and bingo, correct split on a brand new cylinder. Dave and I used up the remaining stocks of 90 cylinders some years back. DMC have reproduced them.

Genuinely, I don't know the numbers, I always just buy new cylinders because dismantling them is a challenge., and I was advised long ago not to rebuild brake masters. Unlike a clutch master, the bores are not used to their full extent, and brake fluid being hydroscopic makes them prone to corrosion in the areas not regularly swept by the seals. This is why a brake m/c often fails when you go to bleed the brakes and push the pedal to the floor. The seals get torn on the pitted cylinder walls.

ANYWAY, the 50/50 split of the 900 cylinder puts more effort on the rears, which is a good thing IMO although it makes the braking effort slightly greater. Available from any motor factor, GSF etc. I get them from here

Hi Jay

Found this while surfing the other day;

FWIW I can get the Lucas one with the reservoir in 50/50 but it'd about £40 more than the one from the Saab place.
