I'd probably just buy the engine/gearbox - they go for £200 or thereabouts. I'm looking to farm out my engine rebuild at the moment (and gearbox) as I have some more pressing matters that require my time. However, I'll probably eat those words soon enough.

Yes Dan, But I was thinking about all the computers and control gear that normally go with a modern-ish engine, in case you need them as well.

Of course; with a manual it's really only the ECU and even then you may want to go aftermarket. It depends on what you want to achieve - I've seen a fair few with looms/ECUs. I've also seen plenty of bare engines - more common that not. Always a gamble.

Great news Claire. That's the version of the engine FIL had in his 406 saloon. And that car was
a rocket ship!
Definitely worth looking at vented front discs and princess style calipers for the front brakes.

ChrisP - the one we've got is the later D9 210hp version - the early cars had the 194hp version. The 210hp one was rejigged by Porsche apparently, and has things like separate coils or something, which makes them easier to sort and more reliable - its also pre-multiplex, so is pretty much 'plug n play' (so Phill tells me lol).
We want a complete donor car, so that we can also swap over to the modern air conditioning system, retro fit the cruise control, etc.
Obviously I've had to go for a Peugeot as I've got a manual box in my car, but those of you with automatics will have a bigger choice, as you can then raid cars like the Laguna 2, Citroen C5, Espace 3, etc etc. All of those, in UK spec, came with an automatic box. It would be lovely to find a way of using the standard 5spd auto with tiptronic from the Laguna/Avantime, but not sure how you'd do it, or even if its feasible.

Are you sure that engine block for Auto is different from Manual?
Usually it is the same as adaptor housing is doing the conversion. You need to replace flywheel and put clutch, but I would replace those components for new anyway.
I recall that one of my friends did swap from auto to manual on Z7X in Renault Safrane as they were all autos and he wanted manual. Transmission came from Laguna, I believe... Let me confirm that.

Interesting stuff Reinsch, once we've removed the engine, we can compare the differences. I'll change the clutch, the one in my car, although replaced in 2006, felt like it was needing changing again before my engine broke.
Anyway....... tomorrow, we're off to deepest darkest London to fetch a 406 Coupe, deal done, insurance arranged, just need to fetch it and cross the guys palms with some cash, and then I can drive it back - this one is MOT'd until next August, so sounds better then the other heap we were looking at in Cheshire (that had no MOT so would need a trailer). If it drives ok, I'll smoke around in it for a bit and make sure the engine is ok - there's no major hurry to scrap it, as we're not in a position yet to pull the engine out of Flopsy and do the frame separation.

Ok, so the donor car is home
Visually, its a shed, so I've no qualms about scrapping it. The engine runs really nicely, and boy is it quick when you squirt the accelerator! It does however have a problem with the steering rack, which was probably caused during the front and rear end damage it sustained in 2014.
Its done 112,000 miles, service records and bits of history with it up to 96000. Last two owners were in the same family.

The battered bodywork....its clear the car has been hit front and back, the NSF alloy has a big chunk out of it and the NSF wing is full of filler and has been 'painted' with a rattle can (not visible in these photos, but I'll put some more up later for full comedy effect.

Claire, in Flickr you can export the links as BBCode and it'll do it in various sizes. Then you can display them here on the forum without needing to click-through. It's how I use Flickr for all of my pics.
Very nice; shame it's in such poor cosmetic condition, but then, that'd be a good car and breaking good ones is never ideal. Looks like a win.
