I am about (hopefully) to remove my dash from my car (binnacle allready out) I did view a 'how to' somewhere that mentioned that you had to remove all the centre consol first. Is this correct or can it be done with the consol in place :?:
Does any one have any tips, ideas, on removing this part. It's badly sun damaged and is going for refurb BTW.
Thanks peeps
Chris
Hmm - it's been over a year, but I think it was Binnacle, knee-pads, air-hoses, glove-box, those 'corner' pieces where the air-vents emerge to join the doors, centre console (but not the metal frame behind it).

By removing the speakers from the underside of the dash, this makes it reasonably flat and can be extracted without having to remove the windscreen side trims - nasty job which would involve cutting the vinyl as it's wrapped round the trims and the screen put in on top :-(.

I remember that there's a bolt in the centre of the dash pointing vertically downwards which was difficult to access - but if it helps, the black plastic air ducting box behind the high-level vents can be separated from the heater box and extracted reasonably easily to improve access.

Good luck - I used a can of Martin's magic grey spray, did a top job, but mine was just discoloured and still thankfully crack-free.

Eeek! This is a job i am really looking forward to doing on #2001, looks like the dash mat is stopping on for a few more months Big Grin
I have now successfully removed the dash, in all it was not that bad a job, although the binnacle was allready out! Probably took about three hours in all and this included removing and reinstalling the centre consoul. Even the 'dreaaded' bolt in the middle of the dash at the rear was not to bad, I found approaching it from the O/S above the heater box you could just reach it, as to getting the washer and nut back on at installation is another thing
Now off to get the dash repaired and recovered

Chris
Im thinking about taking mine out on Friday to put my new one in.
Just to recap:

Binnacle - Never taken this out before, any tips on what to look out for?

knee-pads

air-hoses

glove-box

corner pieces

centre console - Does the center console have to come out? I would have
thought the new dash could be place in above it?
- Do the air vents at the top under the windscreen come
out or do they stay in situe when the dash is removed?

Any further tips?

Cheers!
Yep, thats about it, although for removing the binnacle I found un-doing the speedo at the lamba counter was easier than up behind the binnacle, but other than that much as described.
Yes the centre console does have to come out as the dash has to slide down in the direction its pointing to get it out, and yes the air vents do stay at the windscreen as you slide it out (much to my surprise)
Any probs just ask!!
Chris
Cheers! Is the console hard to remove/re-install?
All in all how long do you think it would take for a reletive novice like me?

Thanks alot!!
From memory remove gear lever surround and A/C panel then there are two bolts under the black gear lever surround and two under the coin tray thingey at the back of the consol, remove all switches and it lifts out leaving the metal cage that holds the radio etc in place. It makes a lot more sence when your there, just go slowly and methodically!!
Chris
From memory it took about 3-4 hours to remove it all so not to bad.
Cheers, i'll let you know how it goes on!
I took my binnacle out last night for the second time and had it out in less than 15 minutes. If its your first time it will be about half an hour.

If you take you drivers seat out of the car it makes it so much better to see right up under the dash.

There is SIX nuts holding the binnacle to the dash and by removing the big black plastic air tubing under the binnacle you will have a much better reach at nuts and bolts hidden underneath.

Once you have removed these nuts GENTLY pull the binnacle towards you in the car from the rear, stick you hand in from the left and you will feel an electrical plug, remove this then going deeper you will also feel the speedo cable, this is held on by a clip underneath that you can release by pushing it inwards. Then stick your hand in from the right and remove the last electrical plug and the binnacle will be able to come away from the dash.

As said above removing the dash console is easy enough but just take your time and remove all the nuts and bolts that hold it down. Have a magnetic tray or a bowl to put all the parts in, there will be loads!!

Here is a link to a site that has downloadable guides on removing the binnacle, dash and centre console.

aww thanks alot. I recall Dave Howarth saying you can remove the speedo at the lamba counter ( as did Chris William ^), does it just unscrew?

Cheers!
Yes it just unscrews from the top, (the white counter thingy in front and above the pedals) Shock
Chris
 Cheers, thought so. Now im paranoid about my hand brake buggering up and leaving me stuck in there - or worse out on the road

Thanks alot, work will probably start tomorrow night then the main bits on friday, I'lltry to photograph as much as poss.
New Dash is in! WHOOO!
However, there have been a few cons about the job. When taking out the console, all of the wires running down the passenger side of the backbone were taped up preventing them from being moved no more than about 3 inches either way. This ment the console would only go up to a little above the back shelf. So I tought I'd try putting the new dash in anyways which was fine, until the bolts in the middle caught the top of the consol and tore two big holes in the vinyl Shock There were already a couple of sun cracks in it so I guess this will just speed up my repair job plans. Any Ideas? Other than getting the whole new consol.

Also the corners of the dash got caught in the car as I was bringing it round to the garage causing some minor paint chips. Any specific type of paint I should use to touch up the chips?

I drilled out the vin plate from the drivers top side of the dash and got some tiny screw to put it in the new one - chuffed with that.

I'll post some pics asap. It looks ace, problem is the rest of the car looks really worn now! Smile Ayone interested in a sun cracked dashboard?! :?:

Cheers for all the advice guys and gals!
