| Club History: How it all got started |
|
The Club was formed in 1996 by two DeLorean enthusiasts Simon Lees-Milne and David Howarth, with the aim to make the De Lorean an accessible car to own and use in the UK. It also gives all owners the opportunity to meet up with each other, helps to locate spare parts and assists with valuations for classic car insurance. By the end of the first year the Club had sixty paid up members who now received a plastic membership card and a regular edition of De Lorean News magazine helping to keep them up to date with current club news and events that were going on around the country. David Howarth organised events and shows and exhibited the DeLorean club stand at the major Classic car shows in London, Birmingham and Manchester, displaying the cars to a new audience of young and old enthusiasts most of whom had never seen a DeLorean before. Whilst David was busy up and down the country displaying the cars, Simon Lees-Milne was busy creating a register of all the De Lorean's in the country with the help of the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to reach out to all owners and to make them aware of our new clubs existence. The club was also now able to offer its own range of club wear to its members, including T shits, sweatshirts, caps and other club wear to show off the De Lorean marques in style. During 1998 a new friendly face appeared on the British De Lorean scene by the name of Chris Parnham. Chris had recently purchased his first De Lorean after many months of searching. However this was no ordinary car but one of the 15 factory original rare right hand drive examples that exist. Shortly after he went on to become the colourful secretary of the club, helping to promote the existence of these rare RHD cars. It was also during this year that a fellow young De Lorean enthusiast Martin Gutkowski was searching the Internet for information on De Lorean's. However with only a few web sites set up about the car at that time, Martin decided to contact the club and help to promote the club on the Internet, the De Lorean Owners club was now on-line. During the next couple of years the club continued to promote the car even further with De Lorean's appearing in Classic Car magazines, and television programs in abundance. The membership also increased to around 100 members with around 80 cars in the country with an average of one car being imported into the county every month. In February 2000 Simon Lees-Milne stood down as the club president to pursue other interests. The Club continued to go from strength to strength with our own e-group mailing list which boasts a healthy daily traffic dealing with and helping to resolve issues on individual's cars or sourcing replacement parts. As we look to the future; with the average club members age only being around 25 years, we hopefully have plenty of time to cherish our special cars and to look after them for DeLorean owners to come. The Club now has a registry of 260 members (now 400) and produces a quarterly 16 page (now 20) part colour glossy magazine called De Lorean News. The magazine features articles from members experiences and interests including specific issues about the car that are relevant to the UK. It also contains information about cars that are for sale and forthcoming events and meetings. There is a newsletter sent out in between magazines keeping members up to date on current events around the country. We wish you very happy De Lorean Motoring and look forward to meeting up at forthcoming events. Best Wishes DOC UK
