Right Hand Drive & European Specification

Chris Parnham the Historian of the DOC writes:-

In the Autumn (fall) of 1999, Larry Bynum in the USA innocently asked, in the DeLorean World magazine, "Where there ever any Right Hand Drive Deloreans produced?" The then Editor, David Knudson, replied, "The factory had plans to produce some, but never did".
As I was at that time, the owner of 4 of these very rare factory original RHD cars, I was somewhat put out with this rather dismissive reply.
It did however point out the little knowledge, or documented evidence of these very rare cars, especially with our American friends, who drive LHD cars!
9 years on, both I and Andy Withers have researched, tracked down, photographed and recorded every known example. This will form a major part of our new book, when it is eventually finished!

In summery, a total of 17 original "factory authorised" RHD cars known to exist, most of the work was carried out by the Andover firm, "Wooler Hodec". A similar number of “post factory” RHD converted cars also exist.

The first recorded RHD car is Vin 510 a black interior manual converted for evaluation purposes. It is possible that some other early cars were converted and subsequently scrapped. Only VIN 510 still survives from this first batch.

It was eventually sold at the factory Auction in Dunmurry in 1984, to Australian Multimillionaire Robert Holmes A-court.

Following his death in 1990 it passed to another Australian owner and in Jan 2008 I had the pleasure of buying it and bringing it back to the UK.

Vins 5565, 5592 and 5638 –are all grey interiors, the "AXI" cars. All were converted in the Dunmurry factory in Northern Ireland in October 81 and registered, AXI 1697, AXI 1698, AXI 1699.

This batch of three (survivors) are quite different from all of the other RHD cars.

These cars all had the Euro-spec rear lights, roof mounted radio aerials, very small side indicator repeaters, no rear wing side markers, white forward facing door lights, fog light switch, twin brake servo's, one mounted in the engine bay where the carbon canister normally lives.

No catalytic converters or Lambda equipment...etc. etc.

The main batch of thirteen  “SIJ cars”, (along with Vin 510) were all based on the “Black Cars” who’s build quality and under-bodies were of very “variable” quality.

All had black interiors and manual transmission, with the exception of one, VIN 12175 or "Auto", which belongs to our former Magazine editor, Andy Withers. These cars were eventually vinned 12171- 12181, plus 12199 and dated May82.

Regards,
Chris Parnham

They are found to differ on different cars as there isn't a place designed for it initally. But they are usually placed next to the window switch on most cars.

Note the fuel pump above the metal fuel tank, also the relocation of the brake master cylinder.

Not a Wooler-Hodec modification but a requirement on all DeLoreans in the UK
